Having a room that’s used for nothing other than storage is a waste of square footage. By remodeling your basement into a bedroom, this allows more room for a growing family, renting out the room, more space for parties, and increasing sale value. Before moving forward in your plans, there are a few things that are important to keep in mind to make sure your future bedroom doesn’t feel like a dungeon in a cold, damp basement.

  • Make sure there is heating set up for the basement, even if it’s just a space heater.
  • Check insulation and windows that may be letting in the cold.
  • Keep it safe with all the safety features you’d also keep upstairs, such as various detectors.
  • Watch out for water, whether it’s using a dehumidifier, sump pump, or both.
  • Test for mold.

Once everything is in order, you can easily design a comfy and cozy bedroom, even if it is in the basement.
